Report from the race.
1.) The car
We decided to go on the race with as low expenses as possible, so we built two cars from the old parts. The car was almost identic, to the Gold EVO 2. The only new parts on the cars were the ball bearing, axles, sub-axles, whell adapters, some plastic parts and the brakes. The car was built for durrability, and not for the fastest laps on the circuit.
2.) The engine
We have used the normal OPS Rally game engine with Mantua 087 pipe. The fuel had 12% castor oil and 20% nitro. Under the cilinder head we used 0,2 mm spacer, and glow plug Mantua Turbo Nr. 7.
3.) The radio
Each of the competitors had his own transmitter. 2x Sanwa EXZES, 1x Futaba MEGATECH PCM, 1x Graupner XR-3. We have used a new SANWA RX-311 reciever, and two ERG-VB servos. The reciever battery was GP NiMh 2300 mAh.
4.) The race:
The race started in heavy rain. After equal fight with Gold EVO 3 and Mantua ECO car, we came on the first position after one and a half hour. From this point we maintained the first place until the end of the race.
After 10 hours of race at 24:00 we had only 37 laps of advantage from Maribor team, so from this point, the race became race betwen two Mantua cars. All other car were already arroun 400 laps behind us, so we didn't pay any attention to them. Until the morning we got the advantage of 137 laps, so we were able to correct some problems and we maintained the first place until the end of the race.
5.) The engine
We started the race with standard OPS Rally engine. In the first 14-hours of race the rain was falling and the track was wet, so the engine was not driving at the full power. After 18 hours of race the track was dry, so the engine was fully loaded for arround 4 hours. It was working perfect all the time, the only problem was incorrect air filter for the wather, but in this period the full power of the engine was not neccecary. In the 22nd hour of the race, the front part of the main shaft was broken, so we destroyed the clutch, the neddle bearing, the pignion and the main gear Z53. We have changed the complete engine, and finished the race with the same type of OPS engine.
After the race, the first engine has no wissible wear on the inside parts, so I am 100% sure, that it would run normaly for some more hours.
6.) The car
On the car we didn't have any significant damage. On the second hour of the race the axle of the diferrential was broken, but the reason for this error is probably the old differential, which is the part of 1997 Futura and has behind many hour of work. Beside this, we didn't break or damage any part of the car during the 24-hours. Because of the borken shaft, we had to change the central Z53 gear, and because of incorrect setup of the engine, we destroyed the same gear after aprox. 1,5 hours, but this is our mistake, which has nothing to do with the car.
The wear on the car parts is almost unvissible, wich will be shown on the pictures on the car, so the car is capable of doing another 24-hours. The diferentials and all the other critical parts are intact.
7.) The tyres
On the start in heavy rain at 14:00 we have used standard Mantua Off-road tyres. The tyre has excelent grip in the first 30 minutes, after thiat it is usable for another 4 or 5 hours. We have changed the first set after 3,5 hours, and the second set, after 6,5 hours at 24:00. After midnight the rain was easy, so the track became wery greasy from the oil. In this oily conditions the standard off-road tyers are not providing enough grip, so we put a used set of Mantua Bandit tyres on the car, and we were driving arround 2 hours with this set. At 2:00 the track was still greasy, so we put the set of Bulldog Off-road tyres, and we keep them on the car until 7:30 in the morning. The rain stopped falling arround 4:00, but the track was still wet. At 7:30 the track started to dry, so there vere already some dry areas, and the temperature vas arround 7 degrees, so we decided to put Mantua V2 tyres with winter compound (black dot). The car was driving good, so we were driving on this set of tyres until the end of the race for arround 6,5 hours. The conditions on the track after 10:00 were already proper for using thermic A and B compound, and the majority of other teams vere using this compound, which was the best decision for those conditions, but because of the big advantage, we decided to drive on winter tyres as long as possible, so we finished the race with them.
8.) The radio
The radio was very vell protected, so we didn't have any problems. After 7 hours of race there was a suspition of radio problem, so we changed the complete plate emidiatly, but we didn't find any wather or other problems. After another error in 18th hour of the race, we put back the original plate, which was working properly until the end of the race, and soon after this we have found that the error was on one of the transmitters ( Graupner XR-3), so we didn't use this transmitter any more.
We have changed the GP 2300 mAh NiMh battery pack each 3 hours, but it was capable to deliver the sufficient power for at least 4 hours or more.
At the end of the race all members of the team are satisfied, because of the good result. We have learned a lot of things, so in the next race we will again compete on the much higher level.
